Theobald defensive about his role

13 April 2012

David Theobald is aiming to prove to Brentford manager Steve Coppell that there is no need to sign a new defender - because he is the man for the job.

Theobald, 23, will continue to deputise for injured Darren Powell against Blackpool tonight and hopes that if he puts in another good performance, it will persuade the Bees boss that there is no need to go looking for a loan deal to bring in a new centre-half.

The former Ipswich man was impressive during Brentford's 1-0 victory over Wycombe last weekend, and contributed to the team's fifth clean sheet in a row.

"I am convinced that I can do the job and this is my chance to stay in the team for the rest of the season," he said.

"I've waited a long time for my chance and it has been frustrating in the reserves. But the timing could turn out to be perfect.

"Hopefully I can do a good job and if the manager likes what he sees and feels that he doesn't need to sign anyone else, then that would be tremendous."

Coppell is expected to field an unchanged side as Brentford aim for their seventh win in eight games.
