The other Brits on the starting grid

13 April 2012
EDDIE IRVINE
(Age 36; GPs 130; Wins 4; Poles 0)

The oldest man on the grid is out of contract at the end of the season. He will have to work wonders with an unpromising Jaguar if he is still to be in Formula One this time next year. That may require a change of style - David Coulthard said this week that if Irvine talked less and worked harder, his car would go faster.

JENSON BUTTON
(Age 22; GPs 34; Wins 0; Poles 0)

No longer the promising wonderkid, Button must put last year's dreadful season with Benetton behind him. He is still with that team, although it has now been renamed Renault, and he should use all he has learned from two seasons in F1 to good effect in this year's more competitive car. He remains highly popular.

ALLAN McNISH
(Age 32; GPs 0; Wins 0; Poles 0)

The winner of the 1998 Le Mans 24-hour race has finally made it to F1 after being test driver for McLaren more than a decade ago. He is driving as No2 to the experienced Mika Salo for F1 newcomers Toyota, whose sensibly modest ambition is to "gain the respect of the paddock".
