The cost of the delays

13 April 2012

Who pays the price for the Wembley fiasco?..

Inflation (£30 million): This will be covered by Multiplex, through the loan the Australian construction company has arranged with two banks.

Wembley running costs (£14m): Between October 2000, when the stadium was closed, and May this year, when it was decided to make cutbacks during the Carter Review, it was costing the FA £1.5m a month. After the cutbacks it still cost about £300,000 a month.

The Carter Review (£1m): Although Patrick Carter was only paid expenses for his six-month review, he used a team of experts including consultants from accountancy firm KPMG and a leading architect. They were paid for their work and the bill is to be picked up by the Government.

Legal and professional fees during the Carter Review and during talks with backers (£1.5m): Paid by the FA.

Picketts Lock national athletics stadium, the Carter report on it and London's aborted bid for the 2005 World Athletics Championships (£2m): UK Sport put up £250,000 towards the bid for the championships. The rest of the money was paid by UK Athletics through a mix of its own money and lottery funding through Sport England. The Carter report cost £150,000 of the total and was paid by Sport England.

Birmingham's alternative bid (£2m): Paid by the City of Birmingham.

Total cost: £50.5m
