Terry to miss final

John Terry will be a notable absentee when the England players watch tonight's European Cup Final between Porto and Monaco.

Memories of Chelsea's semi-final exit to Monaco are still too painful for the Stamford Bridge captain, so when the squad gather for the game at their Euro 2004 training camp in Sardinia, Terry will have to find something else to do.

"The semi-final wasn't a nice night for any of us and it was difficult to take," Terry said.

"I definitely won't be watching the final. It's painful enough getting knocked out. So I'm not going to sit there watching it knowing it should be us in the final. We were very disappointed to lose because we believed we were the better side and deserved to go through."

Terry, like the rest of the Chelsea squad, is waiting to find out who will be in charge at Stamford Bridge next season, with Porto boss Jose Mourinho the favourite to replace Claudio Ranieri.

"I don't mind who wins tonight," Terry said. "All I'm worried about is how Chelsea do next season. I still think it's been a good year for us because we made progress, even if we didn't win anything.

"We still finished second and that's an achievement in itself. Now we have to take it on from there."
