Terry gets England chance

England chance: John Terry

John Terry will get the chance to state his England credentials tomorrow along with his Chelsea club-mate Wayne Bridge.

Sven-Goran Eriksson, speaking ahead of the friendly with Spain in Madrid, said: "John Terry will start tomorrow. It is very hard for the defenders. If we have all of the central defenders available picking two is very hard, because we have four or five top-class players in the world.

"It's very good for us but it is always hard for a player sitting on the bench when he is not used to it."

Sol Campbell's injury means the Chelsea captain will partner Rio Ferdinand and Eriksson added: "Bridge with Cole maybe even from the start to face Spain. It worked very good when they played together, it was fantastic to see and you didn't know who was left-back and who was left midfield, there was lots of forward running. We might see that again tomorrow."

The Swede and Spain's coach Luis Aragones will be limited to six substitutes tomorrow so the game will not see the wholesale changes Eriksson has made in the past. He added: "We will start with the best team, we're going to do some changes but I can use only six substitutes so it's not going to be a revolution at half-time. I know that I've been criticised in the past, that I've changed too many players but it is a very big time for the players just now.

"I didn't do it for the clubs, I did it for the players. They play Saturday or Sunday then have the Champions League or UEFA Cup next week." Eriksson was at St James' Park to see Wayne Rooney score twice in Manchester United's 3-1 over Newcastle United on Sunday when the teenager attacked from the left. Eriksson is delighted the striker has added yet another string to his bow. He explained: "It's always exciting to see Wayne Rooney play. It's not bad for a young man like him to be able to play up front, behind two strikers or to the left. It's very good

"You can't expect him to be the best man on the pitch always but he's doing extremely well."

Eriksson hinted Liverpool goalkeeper Chris Kirkland would not be handed his senior debut yet, largely due to the restrictions in the number of substitutions.

"I hope he can go on being fit, go on playing for Liverpool and sooner or later he will get his chance for England, he is an extremely good talent. I hope we can win. It will be special for Owen and Beckham, playing at home and going into the Real Madrid dressing room with a victory."
