‘Venus Williams won’t give up’

27 June 2012

Richard Williams is adamant his daughter, Venus, will not retire despite her on-going battle against illness which saw the former champion dumped out of the first round.

The 32-year-old American won the last of her seven Grand Slam titles at Wimbledon in 2008. Since then Venus (above) has suffered with Sjogren’s Syndrome, which causes fatigue and joint pain.

But her dad said: “I don’t see why she should retire. She has the biggest serve on this planet. She runs faster than anyone, has a great forehand, a great backhand. I don’t know a player who has as much speed as her. In this sport, speed is money.

“Venus will be alright and Jehovah, that’s the god we serve, will take care of Venus. I think she is coming along great. She just has to have time to make things work out.”
