Naomi Osaka overpowers Coco Gauff to continue US Open title defence

Naomi Osaka produced a stunning display to brush aside teenager Coco Gauff and reach the fourth round of the US Open.

The world number one stormed to a 6-3, 6-0 victory over the 15-year-old after an absorbing contest in front of a packed-out Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The expectation going into this match was immense. Osaka, the darling of last year's tournament after her shock triumph over Serena Williams, was brushed aside as Cocomania swept over the crowd.

But even the huge backing from the crowd couldn't deter the Japanese from the task at hand.

Gauff started confidently, unabashed and free of nerves that any normal 15-year-old playing in front of a packed 23,000-seater arena would have.

But Osaka was ready with a gameplan. The aggression, the calming in between points and the evident training on her backhand.

It was all leading up to this - and she sealed victory with a dominant display in just 65 minutes, giving a smile and warm embrace to Gauff at the net, knowing that the pair will no doubt meet many more times in the future in a newborn rivalry.
