Novak Djokovic continued to mount his Wimbledon title defence after overcoming the resilient Hubert Hurkacz to reach the fourth round.

The world number one was given a tough ride by the highly-rated Pole and dropped a set for the first time at SW19 in the this year's tournament.

But the 32-year-old eventually saw off the challenge of Hurkacz, winning 7-5, 6-7, 6-1, 6-4 in just under three hours of play on No. 1 Court.

Djokovic had only faced the plucky 22-year-old once before, beating him rather convincingly in straight sets at Roland Garros.

But Hurkacz had already knocked out two players ranked above him and was eyeing another scalp against Djokovic.

The Serbian had unhappy memories on No. 1 Court, having lost here in the third round in 2016 to Sam Querrey, and he seemed determined to leave with a smile on his face this time around.

Neither player conceded their serve in the first 10 games before Djokovic earned the crucial break and held his nerve to seal the opening set.

Hurkacz, who was playing some excellent tennis and matching Djokovic in nearly every department, ramped things up on his own serve and remained unbeaten until the tiebreak.

Having gone 3-1 down, the youngster sourced every ounce of energy he could to produce a tremendous fightback, producing a stunning diving volley on the way, and drew level when Djokovic planted a forehand into the net.

The top seed was starting to get angry and that would only be bad news for Hurkacz. Just 25 minutes and a double break later, Djokovic had wrapped up the third set 6-1.

Both players were struggling for grip on the court, which had several patches without grass, and it proved fatal for Hurkacz when his slip allowed Djokovic to break in the third game.

The best players refuse to let go when they get they what they want - and Djokovic was no different. He kept his serve untarnished in the fourth set, and at 5-3 up it never looked like Djokovic would give up his lead.

Hurkacz cursed the court as he slipped to give his opponent match point and the crowd were on their feet a minute later after firing his return long. Not at his best, but Djokovic battled through again.
