Naomi Osaka’s 23-match winning triumph was brought to an end in surprise fashion as she was beaten by Maria Sakkari in the quarter-final of the Miami Open.
Osaka had not lost a match since February 2020, claiming Grand Slam wins at the Australian and US Opens in the interim.
But the number two seed came unstuck against Sakkari on Wednesday.
Sakkari needed only 69 minutes to secure a 6-0 6-4 victory and book her spot in just her third career semi-final.
After failing to win a game in the opening set, former world number one Osaka took a 3-0 lead in the second.
But Sakkari, the number 23 seed, rediscovered her form from the first set to take six of the next seven games en route to an emphatic victory.
She will face Bianca Andreescu for a spot in the final after the Canadian dropped a set en route to defeating Sorribes Tormo.
The Spanish player claimed 44 of her service games to Andreescu’s 40, but was outlasted by the world number nine who emerged a 6-4 3-6 6-3 victor after two hours and 35 minutes.
