Maria Sharapova shocked the world of tennis last night when she admitted failing a drug test at January's Australian Open.

Nike have responded by suspending their relationship with the 28-year-old, who is the world's highest paid female athlete after earning almost $30m in 2015 alone.

Having tested positive for meldonium, a substance Sharapova claimed she had been using since 2006 for health problems, the Russian's admission has thrown her future into doubt.

Sharapova said she had been taking the drug, which was only added to Wada's banned list at the start of the year, after being given it by a "family doctor".

The International Tennis Federation have announced Sharapova will be provisionally suspended from March 12 and the moment she burst onto the scene in 2004, winning Wimbledon at the age of 17, must feel a long way away.

Sharapova has won a total of five Grand Slams throughout her trophy-laden career, including a US Open title that was secured two years after her maiden triumph in SW19.

An Australian Open followed in 2008 while she also has been victorious at Roland Garros twice, with her most recent success arriving in 2014. Could it be her last?
