Kirsten Flipkens refused to blame injury after her semi-final defeat to Marion Bartoli.

The Belgian struggled to find any rhythm and appeared to be some way short of full fitness as she lost 6-1, 6-2 on Centre Court today.

“I am not going to use it as an excuse,” said Flipkens, 27. “That is for sure. Marion played an amazing match. I fell in the first set and I didn't feel anything straightaway but I fell on my bad knee and a couple of games later I started to feel a really sharp pain.

“I think the semis was the maximum I could do this year. I had to play maybe 500 per cent to beat Marion today. She was just too good.

“To have this memory for the rest of my life, ten years after winning the juniors title here, is great. I would have signed for that before my career for sure.”
