Cameron Norrie’s hopes for a second ATP Tour title in 2021 were denied by Casper Ruud in a one-sided San Diego Open final.

Ruud’s 6-0 6-2 win took him to five titles for this season, the most on tour and one more than Novak Djokovic.

Norrie, enjoying the best season of his career, had beaten No1 seed Andrey Rublev, Wimbledon semi-finalist Denis Shapovalov and British No1 Dan Evans on his route to the final.

But there he was totally outplayed by the 22-year-old Norwegian, who dominated the match and now has a first hard-court title this year after the previous four on clay.

Of his tour-leading five titles, Ruud said: “It’s a fun thing to say but obviously Daniil [Medvedev] and Novak have bigger titles so I wouldn’t mind switching up with them if I had the opportunity to switch five 250s to the three Slams and one 250 Novak has.

“But it would be fun to end the year with the most titles, I cannot lie about that.”

The result moved him up to eighth in the race to Turin – the ATP Finals which have switched from London to Italy this season.

Meanwhile, Norrie, one of the most successful players in the men’s game this season, is 14th in the race to make one of those eight spots and has climbed two places in the world rankings to 26th, just four behind British No1 Dan Evans.
