Tennis star Alexander Zverev has been cleared of any wrongdoing after TV suggested he may have used his phone during Wednesday night’s defeat to Stefanos Tsitsipas at the ATP Finals.

Players are not allowed any electronic devices on court during matches and, although cameras picked up Zverev moving his hand as though he was operating a phone in his bag, he insisted he had left his device in the locker room at London's O2 Arena.

He said: “My phone was in the locker room. I don’t know what they saw but it was definitely not a phone.”

The ATP backed the defending champion’s position and said there “has been no breach of ATP rules”.

Zverev lost in straight sets 3-6, 2-6 to Greece's Tsitsipas as he was unable to continue the momentum from his impressive opening win over world no1 Rafael Nadal in Group Andre Agassi.

He returns to action against Daniil Medvedev on Friday.
