Tendulkar hits ton as India close in

12 April 2012

An unbeaten century from Sachin Tendulkar helped drive India to within 39 runs of Australia's first innings total as they reached tea 424 for seven on the third day of the second Test.

Tendulkar was on 106 from 171 balls alongside Harbhajan Singh, who was 41 not out at the break.

Having resumed in the morning 216 for three replying to Australia's 463, Sourav Ganguly and Tendulkar had made solid progress and were frustrating the Australian bowlers before the hosts finally made a breakthrough in the 77th over.

The pair had added a further 77 runs before Ganguly hit to mid-off from Brad Hogg's delivery where Michael Hussey was waiting to make the catch, dismissing the 35-year-old for 67 runs.

Yuvraj Singh joined Tendulkar at the crease but he was dismissed lbw by Brett Lee just before lunch after picking up 12 runs.

MS Dhoni managed just two runs before he was caught out by Adam Gilchrist after the break and the 36-year-old then made a catch from Anil Kumble to take his number of dismissals in Tests to 401.

With India 345 for seven, Harbhajan Singh joined Tendulkar at the crease and the duo formed a solid partnership to add 79 runs and close in on Australia's first innings total.
