Symons aiming to get back on track

Kit Symons will tomorrow attempt to put the disappointment of Welsh failure in Euro 2004 to further his claims to be appointed as the new manager of Crystal Palace.

The central defender has been handed the stewardship of the team on a temporary basis following the departure of Steve Kember and his reign started with a 1-1 draw with Preston two weeks ago.

Now he will attempt to build on that result at Walsall - a match that gives Symons an early chance to erase the memory of Wednesday night in Cardiff and the defeat against Russia.

"It was a huge blow because the team had played so well in Moscow last Saturday," said Symons who was in the squad but not used.

"But now I have to concentrate on Palace. It is a job I would love but if I get it, it will be because we get decent results. We will go to Walsall with a game plan and, hopefully, that will get us the result we are looking for.

"I will be in the team at Walsall because Shaun Derry is suspended and Darren Powell is injured."
