Sweet 16 as Garcia plays out of his skin

13 April 2012

Sergio Garcia sank a threefoot birdie putt worth more than £110,000 on the 16th green and went on to win the Telus skins game at Grandview, near Ontario, Canada.

Garcia, who did not win any skins in Monday's first nine holes, picked up seven skins for that effort and had further success on the second play-off hole.

He finished with a total of around £127,000.

"I had a couple of holes when I played bad shots and then on 16, when everybody looked like they were struggling, I hit two great shots and got seven skins," Garcia said.

Vijay Singh was second with five skins worth more than £60,000, all won on Monday, and John Daly collected five worth slightly less. Canadian lefthander Mike Weir failed to win anything despite making seven birdies on the 6,905-yard Mark O'Meara course.

"Obviously it's disappointing," he said. "I played well but just had the wrong timing and that's what skins is all about."

Garcia added: "I've said it before - in skins games, you have to play well but you have to be lucky.

"You have to make the birdie when nobody does."
