Sven's England on the rise

13 April 2012

England's better than expected World Cup campaign has lifted Sven-Goran Eriksson's team up four places in FIFA's official world rankings to eighth.

Brazil's Final victory over Germany on Sunday saw them move from second to first. Scotland, who failed to qualify for the finals, slipped one place to 55th.

Meanwhile Zico, the former Brazilian star, is poised to take over as coach of Japan.

The 49-year-old has begun negotiations with the Japanese Football Association over a fouryear contract. Zico, a member of Brazil's 1978, 1982 and 1986 World Cup teams, has been managing Japan's J-League champions Kashima Antlers since 1991.

The JFA has been looking for a successor to Philippe Troussier, who led Japan to the second round of the World Cup. The Frenchman said he would not renew his contract and resigned after his team were eliminated by Turkey.

South Africa's Jomo Sono is the latest World Cup coach to quit.

Sono only took over in March but is expected to stay on as head of the technical committee at the South African Football Association.
