Wild celebrations have erupted in Philadelphia after the Eagles pulled off a stunning victory in the Super Bowl to defy all the odds.

The underdogs, playing with reserve quarterback Nick Foles, held their nerve to beat the New England Patriots 41-33 and win the Super Bowl for the first time.

The unlikely win triggered scenes of ecstasy back home in Pennsylvania, where thousands of people took to the streets for a raucous party.

Bars and streets became flooded with revellers as fireworks were set off and fires were started.

Footage shared on social media showed enormous crowds singing and partying on Beaver Avenue.

Police were called in and shut down part of the street in response, according to local reports.

Other videos appeared to show people shaking police cars or jumping on top of vehicles, although police have not publicly commented on the scenes.

The Super Bowl, held in Minneapolis, is the biggest NFL game of the year and saw an estimated 70 per cent of American households tuning in to watch, as well as millions of people around the world.
