Sunday D-day for Campbell

13 April 2012

Tottenham defender Sol Campbell will make a statement about his future on Sunday.

The England centre-back is out of contract on July 1 and has been linked with moves to Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Tottenham have been locked in talks with Campbell's adviser Sky Andrew amid reports that he has turned down an offer of £80,000 a week from the club.

Daniel Levy, Tottenham's non-executive director, has personally taken charge of negotiations and yesterday the club claimed they were "optimistic" of keeping him.

It is believed that Campbell has been offered a £100,000-a-week tax-free deal by Barcelona although he would almost certainly prefer to stay in this country.

The 26-year-old is free to talk to other English clubs, as it is after the third Saturday in May. Rival clubs now have the right to open negotiations with the player and his representatives, without having to wait until July 1 to make the first approach.

Celtic's Ramon Vega, who was Campbell's defensive partner at Spurs before he moved to Scotland, said earlier this week: "If he has the chance to go to a club in Europe or England to win trophies, I would advise him to go. He has to think seriously about it.

"It is no good staying at a club for 15 years and winning nothing at the end of your career while other players can say they won 'this and that"'.
