Stupples to cap great year with Championship date

14 April 2012

British Open women's golf champion Karen Stupples goes into today's Safeway Classic in Portland, Oregon, poised to clinch her place in next month's Samsung World Championship.

The top 16 on the money list will head to Palm Springs in California next month and the 31-year-old, who comes from Kent, goes into the final counting tournament seventh on the LPGA money list.

Having earned £480,000 in prize money this year Stupples, who opened the American season with a victory in Tucson before adding the British Open title at Sunningdale last month, has already made more this year than she did in her first five seasons on tour.

"It has been an amazing year," she said. "It's great to get into the World Championship and I've also qualified for the LPGA Tournament of Champions and the end-of-year ADT Championship. It will be my first time at all three."

Catriona Matthew, 11th in the list with £320,000, is the other British player close to qualifying for the World Championship.
