Strike duo on song in Real victory

12 April 2012

Real Madrid got their Champions League Group E campaign up and running on Tuesday, Raul and Ruud van Nistelrooy grabbing braces in the 5-1 demolition of 10-man Dynamo Kiev.

The Spanish giants opened the group stage with a 2-0 defeat to Lyon a fortnight ago back but they showed their credentials with a crushing win at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Both Van Nistelrooy (20 and 70) and Raul (27 and 61) scored either side of the break, with Jose Antonio Reyes netting the other on the stroke of half-time.

Real, who again started David Beckham on the substitutes' bench, even afforded Ronaldo some game time, the Brazilian getting 18 minutes of action after his return from a knee injury.

The visitors, who had goalkeeper Olexandr Shovkovskiy dismissed in the second half, grabbed a consolation through Artem Milevskiy (47) but remain without a point so far - they lost 4-1 at home to Steaua Bucharest two weeks ago.

Lyon, meanwhile, followed up the win over Real with a comfortable 3-0 success at Steaua, Brazil striker Fred (44), Portugal midfielder Tiago (55) and France winger Florent Malouda (90) scoring the goals.

In Group H, AC Milan failed to break down Lille as the two sides played out an entertaining goalless draw in France. Alberto Gilardino and Kaka missed good chances for the Italians while Clarence Seedorf had a goal disallowed for offside, even though TV replays suggested otherwise.

In the group's other match, Da Silva Julio Cesar 28th-minute goal for AEK Athens secured a 1-1 draw at home to Anderlecht, for whom Nicolas Frutos had netted three minutes earlier.

Milan top the group on four points, with Lille and Anderlecht both on two points.

Celtic were victorious this time out, beating FC Copenhagen 1-0 thanks to a goal from the penalty spot. Michael Gravgaard was the guilty party for the Danish side, fouling the lively Shunsuke Nakamura after 34 minutes to concede the spot-kick, which Kenny Miller put away.
