Stadium bill soaring for 2012 Games

Headache: Runaway costs are a problem for London 2012 chief Coe
14 April 2012

The cost of building the 2012 Olympic Stadium in East London has soared to £630million, more than twice the original estimate.

The increase would add to a spiralling budget, which Olympic Minister Tessa Jowell admitted last month had risen already by £900m.

Construction News claims that the £630m bill is the price quoted by the construction consortium chosen by the Olympic Delivery Authority, which is responsible for the Games' venues and infrastructure.

The original bid document in 2004 put the cost at £280m. The estimate by Sir Robert McAlpine's consortium is £250m more than McAlpine needed to build Arsenal's Emirates Stadium.
