Spurs linked with Valente

Tottenham Hotspur are believed to have failed with a bid to sign Portugal and FC Porto left back Nuno Valente.

It is thought that the White Hart Lane outfit offered the UEFA Champions League winners cash plus the chance to take back striker Helder Postiga in exchange for the highly-rated Valente, after the forward failed to make an impact in North London following his £6.25 million switch from FC Porto.

However, Porto president Pinta da Costa is reportedly not keen on a swap deal but Spurs are unlikely to take no for an answer and could come back with an improved offer.

Spurs, who have also been linked with a move for French full back Bixente Lizarazu, face competition for Valente's signature from Lancashire side Bolton who have already confirmed their interest in the marauding stopper after his impressive displays for his country during Euro 2004.

Birmingham have also expressed their admiration for the player who is rated at around £2 million, but reports in Portugal suggest that Spurs and French giants Marseille are favourites to land Valente.
