Spurs eye McCarthy

Tottenham hope to sign Benni McCarthy as part of a swap deal that would take Pedro Mendes back to FC Porto

Martin Jol knows the South African striker from his time at Ajax and wants to add extra firepower to his squad, especially as Robbie Keane is likely to leave White Hart Lane.

Jol met McCarthy's agent, Rob Moore, last month and the 27-year-old would welcome a move to the Premiership. Jol's good working relationship with the Portuguese club's new manager, fellow Dutchman Co Adriaanse, will strengthen his cause, but Spurs face competition from Newcastle and Bolton.
