At the seaside: Sailing

When: July 29-August 11
Where: Weymouth and Portland, Dorset
What: after topping the sailing medals table in Beijing (six), Britain will be pulling out all the stops to retain its international reputation for navigating the high seas. A distinct home advantage means hopes are high.
The star: British triple gold and silver medallist Ben Ainslie CBE will be hoping for his fourth consecutive gold.
Cost of tickets: some sites free, preliminaries £20-£35, finals £55

Shooting the rapids: Canoe Slalom

When: July 29-August 2
Where: Lee Valley White Water Centre, Hertfordshire
What: Lee Valley White Water Centre was specially constructed for the Olympics and will host the canoe and kayak slalom events. Athletes will be fighting against grade-four rapids on the 300m competition course, which is set in the rolling hills of Hertfordshire.
The stars: Slovakian four-time world champion and 2008 Olympic gold medallist Michal Martikán will be the man to beat in the Men's C-1 class, although Britain's 2008 silver medallist David Florence will be at his heels.
Cost of tickets: preliminaries £20-£60, finals £35-£150

On the river: Rowing

When: July 28-August 4
Where: Eton Dorney, Buckinghamshire
What: Dorney Lake, which is owned by Eton College and features a beautiful pavilion, will guarantee that the rowing will be a quintessentially British event. After leading the field in Beijing with six medals overall, Britain will be looking to uphold its reputation.
The star: few can be hungrier for gold than Brit Scot Grainger, who considered retirement after a third consecutive silver in the double scull at Beijing in 2008.
