Velodrome is a winning design

5 April 2012

The velodrome was today declared joint winner of an award for the best new building in London.

The £93million arena, dubbed the Pringle because of its curved roof, was designed by Hopkins architects, with input from Sir Chris Hoy.

It shares the top prize from New London Architecture, a forum that debates the future shape of the capital, with the Barking Central regeneration project.

Sir David Higgins, former chief executive of the Olympic Delivery Authority, was named "New Londoner of the Year" for his "brilliant leadership". Other winners include the cycle hire scheme, the London Library, One New Change shopping centre and Boris Johnson's plans for a Thames cable car.
