Team GB raced to another medal in the velodrome as Matt Walls and Ethan Hayter hung on for a gutsy silver in the men’s Madison race.

Laura Kenny and Katie Archibald dominated the first running of the women’s race on Friday but the men’s race was much more chaotic and competitive, with Denmark eventually taking gold on 43 points.

Walls - winner of the omnium earlier in the week - and Hayter looked under pressure for bronze with just eight of the 200 laps remaining but found another wind to power away and take silver - level on 40 points with bronze medallists France.

“I was cooked halfway in but we managed to find a bit of gas at the end,” said a drained Walls. “That was everything I had.”

Silver is a first medal for Walls’ Manchester housemate Hayter, part of the team pursuit squad who finished seventh earlier in the week.
