Chris Mears and Jack Laugher won the first ever Olympic gold in the history of British diving with a remarkable performance in the men's three-metres synchronised springboard.
Mears and Laugher held off valiant efforts from the Chinese and American pairs to make Olympic history at the Maria Lenk Aquatic Centre, following the bronze won by Tom Daley and Daniel Goodfellow earlier this week.
A huge score from American pair Michael Hixon and Sam Dorman in the final round that scored 98.04 put all the pressure on Britain, who had led for much of the contest.
Requiring 87 for victory Mears and Laugher responded in exceptional fashion, scoring 91.20 to maintain their advantage. Only China could catch them but Qin Kai and Cao Yuan were unable to continue their country's dominance on the diving boards, ending the competition with a bronze.

The Leeds pair of Mears and Laugher had won World Championships bronze in 2015, Commonwealth gold in 2014 and European gold in May. But no British divers had ever achieved what they did on Wednesday night.
Mears was fifth alongside Nick Robinson-Baker at London 2012, while Laugher finished a lowly 27th in the individual event four years ago.
Laugher, the 21-year-old from Huddersfield, has a good medal opportunity when the individual competition rolls around in Brazil on Monday, too.
Even the lurid green of the venue's pool could not spoil the party for Mears and Laugher, who secured Britain's third gold of the Games to cap a glut of medals over the space of a few hours in Rio de Janeiro.
