Adam Peaty has won Team GB's first medal of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games after beating Cameron van der Burgh to gold in the 100m breaststroke final.

The 21-year-old, competing at his first Olympics, beat his own world record in the heats before posting the second-fastest time in history in Saturday's semi-final to secure a favourable middle lane for Sunday's medal race. And he again smashed his own world record in Sunday's showpiece with a time of 57.13.

After seeing Hannah Miley fall less than two-tenths of a second short of bronze in the 400m individual medley on day one in the pool, Peaty ensured Great Britain would close day two wit a medal on the board.

And Team GB didn't have long to wait for a second medal as Jazz Carlin followed Peaty's act with an impressive swim in the Women's 400m frreestyle final moments later.

The Brit edged into second with three lengths to go and held position to to beat America's Leah Smith to silver, while Katie Ledecky won gold, setting a new world record.

Cyclist Lizzie Armitstead, who won Team GB's first medal four years ago at London 2012, missed the chance to repeat the trick earlier on Sunday in the women's road race, finishing fifth.
