Arsenal striker Vivianne Miedema scored four goals as Holland ruthlessly thrashed Zambia 10-3 in an epic Olympic Games opener in Rifu.

Reigning European champions Holland were making their debut in the Olympics and wasted no time in racing to a 6-1 lead at half-time.

Miedema is the nation’s leading all-time goalscorer and showed her typically calm touch in front of goal to score three before the 30-minute mark.

Barcelona forward Lieke Martens scored twice, with further goals coming from Shanice van de Sanden, Jill Roord, Lineth Beerenstyn and Victoria Pelova.

Zambia, ranked 104 in the world, saw captain Barbra Banda score a hat-trick of her own in a feast of goals.

Netherlands coach Sarina Wiegman is stepping down after the Olympics to lead England, replacing Phil Neville.

The top two sides in each of the three groups - plus the two best third-placed sides - will advance into the knockout stage.

Holland face Brazil, who beat China 5-0 this morning, on Saturday.
