Athletics fans are being given the chance to own a piece of London 2012 history as the Olympic Stadium prepares to welcome back gold medallists Usain Bolt and Mo Farah.

A new track has been laid in time for the Müller Anniversary Games, which start today, and the running surface used for the Olympic and Paralympic Games is now being offered for sale to members of the public.

Framed track-shaped pieces measuring 12cm by 7.5cm are available for £60 each, with a larger 26cm by 16cm “Track in a Box” version priced at £99 in its own commemorative package.

Other versions include numbers from both the start and finishing lines, with the majority of the track being taken from the 100m straight where Bolt won gold and set a new Olympic record.

Proceeds from the public sale will go back into maintaining and operating the stadium, which will be the new National Competition Centre for UK athletics as well as the home of West Ham United.

Sections of the track will also be presented as gifts to local schools, as well as to 2012 Olympic and Paralympic gold medallists.

Stars Jessica Ennis-Hill and Katarina Johnson-Thompson are among the Britons competing at the stadium tonight in the two-day Anniversary Games and both will return for tomorrow’s action when Dina Asher-Smith and Farah also take to the track in 100m and 5000m events respectively.

David Edmonds, chairman of E20 Stadium LLP, said: “There were world records and great sporting moments in the summer of 2012. The former Olympic Stadium’s track holds many amazing memories so we’re delighted to offer the opportunity for people to own a piece and treasure it for ever.”

The Anniversary Games will be Farah’s last race before Rio 2016 and he told the Standard’s ES Magazine this week he is “fired up” for the defence of his 5,000m and 10,000m Olympic titles. Britain’s most successful long-distance runner said in Brazil he wants to “do something never done before”, adding: “To win Olympic gold twice — again... it’ll be pretty incredible.”

British Athletics supporters and residents in Newham are being given the first opportunity to purchase the track this weekend before the general sale to the public begins on Monday at www.london2012track.com.

Newham Mayor Sir Robin Wales said: “This track helped create some of the most iconic moments from the 2012 Games and it is great our residents have priority to buy a piece of history.”

Evening Standard readers also have the opportunity to win one of five pieces of the track. You can enter the prize draw at standard.co.uk/offers. The draw closes at 11.59pm on August 7. Terms and conditions apply.
