These are the first sketches of the 2012 Games by the official artist for the London Olympics and Paralympics.

Boris Johnson has commissioned political cartoonist Nicholas Garland, his former colleague at the Daily Telegraph and Spectator magazine, to provide a graphic record of the Games.

Garland, 76, who has completed five sketches, including one of the torch relay yesterday, said: “Boris is someone I have known for a long, long time. He had this idea some time ago and we talked about it. When the Olympics got under way he said he would like to go ahead and do this.

“The brief is really very wide — he did not say I want this many drawings or that, or this medium or technique — just draw what interests you, and what you see, and finish with a graphic record. There are the famous Zil lanes and many cultural events, but I am not going to do any cartoons about the Olympics or approach it in a satirical vein.”

The works are expected to go on display in an exhibition or publication.
