Ken Livingstone: Capital's roads face shutdown

Ken Livingstone today called on Boris Johnson to "take a tighter grip of the transport plans" for the Olympics.

Mr Livingstone has written to the Mayor outlining his concerns that parts of the capital "will go into shutdown mode" because of road restrictions put in place for the Games.

The Standard yesterday revealed that drivers will be banned from turning right on some routes, traffic lights will be phased and parking bays will be suspended two weeks before the 2012 event to speed up VIP traffic.

The restrictions mean that disruption for Londoners will be far greater than previously suggested. In mayoral candidate Mr Livingstone's letter, seen by the Standard, he writes: "A clearer picture must be given of all the proposed traffic changes and how the agencies involved will give a commitment to real consultation.

"Businesses will not be able to get deliveries in normal hours; postal and refuse collection services for residents will be disrupted; taxi and private hire drivers may face long delays and loss of custom."
