Great Britain claimed an unexpected gymnastics medal in the women's trampoline as Bryony Page clinched silver at the Rio Olympic Arena.

The 25-year-old, who finished 10th at last year's trampoline world championships in Odense, Denmark, scored 56.040 from her routine to finish runner-up behind Canada's Rosannagh Maclennan.

Maclennan compiled a score of 56.465 to bag the gold medal, while world champion Dan Li of China sealed the final podium place with 55.885.

Page said: "I didn't expect to medal and to get a silver, I couldn't have asked for more. I got up there and did my absolute best on that trampoline when it mattered in the final.

"I put so much effort in, I've put everything into training and to improving myself as a person and an athlete and it's paid off in the most amazing way I can think of.

"I think once I've retired from the sport and watching the Olympics, not as an athlete, is when it will sink in. It's been an incredible journey so far and hopefully more to come."

A British woman had never before reached the final of the event, which made its Olympic debut in 2000, but Page qualified in seventh, with the top-eight progressing, while compatriot Kat Driscoll finished two places higher.

Driscoll, who won world titles in the synchro and team events three years ago, settled for a sixth-place finish in the final with a score of 53.645.

She said: "It's a real mix of emotions. Coming in the big aim was to make a final so it was really good to have done that. We haven't had a girl make the final yet, so for two of us to do it is amazing.

"I'm disappointed. My routine in the final was much better to the prelims and it didn't score much different so on a personal level that's just a bit disappointing.

"I'm so happy and proud to have just made the final.

"We're from a sport that no one really knows about and we get lost in some of the bigger sports so it's good that two of us made the finals and to get a medal."
