Spencer snub overshadows Curragh build-up

Not wanted: Jamie Spencer

The Curragh is the centre of attention this weekend where Jim Bolger's New Approach attempts to land a second Derby.

Controversy sur rounded New Approach's victory at Epsom earlier this month after Bolger had indicated that the colt's main target was the Irish Derby, but the build-up to Sunday's Dubai Duty Free-sponsored contest has been dominated by an apparent rift between trainer Luca Cumani and jockey Jamie Spencer. client had not ridden for Cumani lately but expects the joint-champion jockey to partner one for the stable later this week.

However, Sheret explains that this apparent resumption of contact is not down to the pair building bridges.

He added: "I expect he will be riding one for the stable later this week, but that is because the owner wants him rather than the trainer. I'm very much in the dark as to why it might be, but it seems that he isn't needed."

Meanwhile, the BBC will show the Irish Derby via its interactive service via the red button on Sunday.
