South Africans collapse after Cullinan ton

13 April 2012

Daryll Cullinan completed a record 13th Test century for South Africa before his side collapsed on the first day of the second Test against West Indies.

A third-wicket stand of 99 between Cullinan, who made 103, and Jacques Kallis (53) lifted the South Africans into a strong position at 161 for two.

But other than openers Herschelle Gibbs (34) and Gary Kirsten (23) no other batsman achieved 20 as the innings subsided to 286 all out.

The West Indies reached two without loss in a single over before the close.

It needed Wavell Hinds, turning his arm for the first time in 16 Tests, to make the crucial breakthrough as he caught and bowled Kallis, who slammed seven fours and two sixes while racing to a half-century off 77 balls.

That stand had lasted just 92 minutes and Cullinan went on to reclaim the South African Test century record from team-mate Kirsten before top-edging an attempted sweep having faced 155 balls and hit 14 fours.

South Africa lost their last eight wickets for 125 runs to the delight of a noisy 20,000-strong crowd.
