Smith takes bronze for Britain

Graeme Smith claimed Britain's first individual medal of the World Swimming Championships in Japan today when he took bronze in the 800m freestyle.

Smith set a new British record of 7:51.12sec but Australia's Ian Thorpe shattered his own world record to win in 7:39.16 and claim his third gold of the championships.

Britain's Paul Palmer went out of the 200m after finishing fifth in his semi-final in 1:49.32.

Russia's Roman Sloudnov won the 100m breaststroke in 1:00.16 as Darren Mew, of Bath University, came seventh in 1:01.92.

Neil Willey went out of the 50m backstroke after finishing sixth in his semi-final in 25.98sec, just 0.08sec outside his own British record.
