Slender lead for Ennis

Jessica Ennis
12 April 2012

Jessica Ennis saw her lead in the heptathlon trimmed to just 11 points after the third of seven events in the European Championships in Barcelona on Friday evening.

Ennis, who led from start to finish to win the world title in Berlin last year, remained on course to do so again after winning the 100m hurdles and high jump in the morning session.

That gave her a 134-point lead over Olympic champion Nataliya Dobrynska, but that lead was wiped out in the first round of the shot in the Olympic Stadium.

While Ennis could only manage a first round 13.49 metres, 76 centimetres down on her personal best, Dobrynska threw a season's best of 15.88m to move into a 26-point lead.

Ennis could not improve in the second round, throwing 13.11m, but the 24-year-old from Sheffield responded superbly with her final attempt, a throw of 14.05m taking her back into the lead.

After three events Ennis had 3,022 points, with Ukraine's Dobrynska on 3,011 and world silver medallist Jennifer Oeser of Germany on 2,867.
