Sinclair: I may have been wrong

Ken Dyer13 April 2012

Trevor Sinclair today admitted that his decision to return to England last week could have been a mistake.

Sinclair, who is now a bona fide member of the squad following the withdrawal of Danny Murphy through injury, conceded that he had put "pressure on myself" after going back home.

The West Ham midfielder spent two nights at home in Essex before flying-back out to join the rest of the England squad in Japan.

He said that on his return he had a meeting with England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson and told him he was not keen on playing on the right side of midfield in a 4-3-3 formation.

Sinclair played on the left as a second half substitute in the 2-2 draw with Cameroon and looked much happier.

"I know I have put pressure on myself and, in retrospect, it might have been the wrong thing to do.

"People have to understand how I felt though. It wasn't as if there were a few standby players out with the squad.

"I was the only one and I didn't feel part of it no matter how hard I tried.

"It was as if I was only waiting for one of my mates to get injured. It wasn't a nice feeling.

"In retrospect though, perhaps I should have stayed but the main thing is I'm back now. I had a couple of nights back home and spoke to Glenn Roeder at West Ham.

"He told me to keep going, keep training and perhaps I would get my chance. That's the way it has turned out and I feel much happier now. I spoke to Mr Eriksson when I arrived back out here. I just told him I was not doing myself justice on the right in a 4-3-3 formation."

Meanwhile, David Seaman, who missed the Cameroon match with a slight groin injury, is expected to be fit in time to play in England's World Cup opening Group F match against Sweden on Sunday.
