Dive? Hazard lights up Stamford Bridge with a controversial winner

Eden Hazard’s goal was the difference this afternoon as Chelsea picked up the three points they needed to win the title at home to Crystal Palace today.

But of the 127 fans who voted in Standard Sport’s poll 70 per cent thought that the Belgian dived for the penalty that led to Chelsea’s winner.

Many watching felt that Hazard had gone to ground far too easily under the challenge of James McArthur, with Thierry Henry telling Sky Sports that, whilst he thought it was a penalty, the Chelsea forward had been “clever” in searching for contact.

The 24-year-old, who was awarded PFA Player of the Year last Sunday, tamely fired a penalty straight at Palace keeper Speroni, who should have done much better than to palm the shot back out into the area.

Hazard headed in the rebound, and from that moment on the title seemed in no doubt.

This is not the first time Chelsea’s star player has found himself in hot water over diving, with a penalty also awarded to Hazard in controversial circumstances during the Blues 2-1 win over QPR in November.
