Schumacher fights back after high-speed scare

13 April 2012

Michael Schumacher narrowly avoided a 150mph smash to record the second fastest time in today's practice session for the Italian Grand Prix.

The five-time world champion skidded off the track at Monza after losing control of his Ferrari on the first lap. His car brushed against the tyre barrier but he managed to avoid a more serious crash and got the car back to the garage.

Schumacher came back out to record the second best time, just 0.1seconds behind team-mate Rubens Barrichello.

The German, who leads the championship by one point with three races to go, was 0.2secs quicker than McLaren's Kimi Raikkonen with the Williams of Juan Pablo Montoya fourth.

Meanwhile, Bahrain and China have been included on the 17-race schedule for 2004, subject to their new circuits passing safety inspections. Canada and Austria have been dropped.
