Schofield left stranded as England wickets fall

13 April 2012

Chris Schofield kept England A's tail wagging in Georgetown but the tourists lost their last three wickets before lunch to set Guyana a first innings target of 294.

Resuming on 218 for seven overnight, Schofield and Chris Read added just five runs before Read was run out in the third over of the morning.

Striker Read was too slow to react to Schofield's call for a single and Ramnaresh Sarwan produced a rapid return to the bowlers end that saw the England man well out of his crease.

He was the fourth player in the order to play himself in, then find himself dismissed for 24 but the arrival of the powerful hitter Alex Tudor gave the tail some impetus and the Surrey fast bowler, who made a Test match 99 against New Zealand, got off the mark with a well struck four through the covers.

He hit five more boundaries and put on 54 with Schofield when Carl Hooper missed a run out chance, letting a return from Mahendra Nagamootoo slip through his hands with both batsmen stranded in the middle of the pitch.

Next ball, Tudor became the second victim of Schofield's lightening fast reactions between the wickets, failing to make the crease after risking a single to point.

He made 32 from 69 balls in a powerful and attractive innings and left with the score on 277 for nine.

Ryan Sidebottom came close to being another run out victim shortly after coming in as last man but after Schofield had swept Hooper over the mid wicket boundary for six, the Yorkshireman was trapped lbw by Hooper giving the Guyana skipper his fifth wicket and bringing the England A innings to a close on 293, with Schofield unbeaten on 62.

At lunch. Guyana openers Azeemul Haniff and Seonarine Chattergo had put on 10, leaving them to collect another 284 runs to win first innings points.
