Saracens make a move to link Farrell and son

13 April 2012

Saracens will announce the first simultaneous father-and-son signing in rugby union history on Tuesday with a double deal for the Farrell family.

While England centre Andy has agreed to stay at Vicarage Road for two more seasons, his 15-year-old son Owen will join the club's academy on a three-year apprenticeship. Already an England schoolboy international, Faz Jnr, is a real chip off the old block — an inside centre.

Family: Owen and father Andy

Sarries have beaten off a clutch of rugby league clubs to sign the schoolboy who has played several matches for their youth team, an unexpected bonus made possible by his father's transfer from Wigan three years ago.

Andy's readiness to extend his career until May 2010 raises the intriguing possibility of father and son playing in the same team.

Farrell, 32, said: 'I'm absolutely thrilled. As a father, I'm proud of what Owen has achieved so far.

'I've been spelling it out to him that I have seen many people sign a first contract only to fall by the wayside. Getting that second contract is the crucial thing and, very often, that's all about attitude.

'We came to the agreement with Saracens because of the interest being shown by rugby league clubs. The main thing for Owen is to strike a balance between his rugby and his studies because he has two years of A-levels coming up.

'As for the possibility of the two of us playing together in the same team, well, he'll have to get a move on!'
