Sanchez refuses to speak after win

12 April 2012

Northern Ireland manager Lawrie Sanchez could face a UEFA fine after refusing to attend a post-match press conference on Wednesday.

Sanchez had just seen his team beat highly-fancied Spain 3-2 in a Euro 2008 qualifier at Windsor Park but, while the players enjoyed a lap of honour, Sanchez went to ground.

Irish Football Association chief executive Howard Wells said: "It has been a difficult and traumatic time."

Relations between Sanchez and the press have become slightly strained.

A national newspaper ran a front page story today about players enjoying a night out in Belfast.

It is understood Sanchez gave the players permission to leave the team hotel and no curfews were broken.

Leeds striker David Healy was the hero for Sanchez's side, scoring all three goals to become the first Northern Ireland player to score a hat-trick for 15 years.

Spain had twice led with goals from Xavi and David Villa but the hosts - and Healy - responded each time to secure a memorable victory.

Healy was quick to pay tribute to his team-mates, claiming the result was perfectly timed following Saturday's 3-0 defeat by Iceland.

"I love nights at Windsor Park," Healy told BBC 2 Northern Ireland. "Everybody felt we let people down on Saturday. The players were more disappointed than the fans on Saturday but tonight we showed our character more than anything. We've bounced back and it's a massive occasion."
