Safiul strikes rock England

Shafiul Islam struck twice in consecutive overs to undermine England's hopes of dominating the first morning of the second npower Test with Bangladesh at Old Trafford.

After Andrew Strauss had completed the apparently important business of winning the toss on a sunny morning in Manchester, there was rich promise of runs for the taking on a pacy pitch.

But after a seamless stroll to 44 without loss in 12 overs, Strauss himself was unable to cash in personally and then England were forced to reassess when Jonathan Trott also went cheaply to Shafiul in a total of 52 for two after an hour's play. Strauss edged some well-directed full-length swing to second slip, and Shafiul then took the pace off for a cutter that snaked between bat and pad to see off number three Trott.

After Bangladesh took the field wearing black armbands, following the fire disaster which has killed more than 100 people in Dhaka, Strauss and Alastair Cook began with a rush of early boundaries off Shahadat Hossain.

Cook's was the first, clipped off his legs and followed by a crunching off-drive two balls later as England set out to wrap up victory in this two-match series on the back of their eight-wicket success at Lord's.

Strauss had already cut Shahadat to the point boundary and then pushed him away off the pads, squirted a full toss off the edge down to third-man and pulled dismissively as three more fours came in one over.

But Shafiul, sharing the new ball, was more accurate until he strayed too full on to Cook's pads and was dispatched wide of mid-on for another four.

Any England troubles seemed a world away - until Shafiul had his unexpected say.
