Justin Rose missed out on a spot on Europe’s Ryder Cup team as Padraig Harrington used his captain’s picks to add rookie Shane Lowry to his side, along with stalwarts Ian Poulter and Sergio Garcia.

Lowry missed out on an automatic place in the team after a disappointing final day of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth on Sunday but the 34-year-old, who won the Open in 2019, will make his debut at Whistling Straits later this month after getting the nod from fellow Irishman Harrington.

Garcia, who is the Ryder Cup’s all-time leading points scorer, and Poulter, who has become a talismanic figure for Europe across his six appearances, were both captain’s picks for Thomas Bjorn at the last renewal in Paris three years ago and were always expected to make the cut again.

After Lee Westwood and Austria’s Bernd Wiesberger secured automatic spots with their performances at Wentworth, Harrington was essentially left with a straight choice between Lowry and Rose.

The Englishman, who has played in five of the last six Ryder Cups, showed signs of a return to form after a bogey-free final round of 65 earned a tie for sixth at this week’s European Tour event but it was not enough to sway Harrington’s decision.

The trio of wildcards will join the nine players who have already earned automatic selection, including the likes of Rory McIlroy and world No1 John Rahm.

Tommy Fleetwood, one of the stars of Europe’s win as a rookie three years ago, makes his second appearance and is joined by fellow Englishmen Paul Casey, Tyrell Hatton, Matt Fitzpatrick and Westwood.

Rookies Wiesberger and Viktor Hovland complete the lineup, the latter becoming the first Norwegian to play in the competition.

US captain Steve Stricker had opted for six captain’s picks and confirmed his side earlier this week with the selections of Daniel Berger, Harris English, Tony Finau, Xander Schauffele, Scottie Scheffler and Jordan Spieth.

They join Collin Morikawa, Brooks Koepka, Justin Thomas, Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson and Patrick Cantlay, with Ryder Cup regular Patrick Reed missing out.
