Standing firm: Nigel Wray says Saracens do not agree with the salary cap as it is

Saracens owner Nigel Wray today denied that Saracens are being investigated for breaching the Premiership salary cap.

It was reported that an inquiry into allegations that Saracens had broken the limit, which was £4.5m last season, had been suspended until the next meeting of Premier Rugby clubs in June. Confidentiality rules stop Premier Rugby and the clubs from speaking directly about any investigation and a PRL spokesman today said: “The salary cap is still being policed. There is no amnesty.”

Standard Sport has been told there is a six-six split between the clubs about scrapping the wages limit and no formal accusations have been put to Sarries.

Wray told Standard Sport: “I am happy to make it very clear we do not breach the wage cap — full stop. That is the legal advice we have received and we are not under investigation.

“We appear to have been selected from a number of clubs and just have to put up with it.

“The June meeting will discuss key items including the wage cap and that is not to say we agree with the situation in its current form. It does not allow us to compete on a level playing field with teams in Europe and penalises clubs who produce English-qualified players who are then away for six months. Clubs are not adequately compensated in the cap.”
