Scotland claim Owen Farrell was partly to blame for the tunnel incident before Saturday’s game which led to the England player allegedly being elbowed.

Television footage appeared to show Farrell and Scotland No 8 Ryan Wilson in a scuffle before they were pulled apart by team-mates.

A source close to the Scotland team insists Farrell was on the left of the tunnel which leads to the home dressing room and was pushed towards the right side, where England’s dressing room was. Farrell reacted by having a go at Wilson, who had a go back.

Six Nations Rugby were due to write to the two Unions on Monday to ask for their versions of events. The replies will be reviewed to decide what further action, if any, will be taken.

At present, the Rugby Football Union are not planning to hold an investigation into the incident.

England head coach Eddie Jones said he had not seen the incident and did not believe it had any bearing on the match.

Scotland assistant coach Matt Taylor said: “There was a bit of pushing and shoving, both teams were highly motivated. I would imagine they bumped into each other and there might have been a few words exchanged.”

The match citing officer is also expected to examine an incident involving Wilson and England No8 Nathan Hughes, after the Scottish player’s hand came close to the eye of his opponent.
