England will face South Africa for the first time since losing the World Cup final to them as part of next year’s Autumn Internationals at Twickenham.

The RFU announced today that England would face Australia, South Africa and an as yet unnamed “emerging nation” across successive Saturdays next November.

England were beaten in last November’s World Cup final in Japan by the Springboks, who have not played since being crowned world champions because of the coronavirus pandemic.

This year’s November programme was rejigged when the leading Southern Hemisphere powers were unable to travel north, with the Autumn Nations Cup – which England won on Sunday with a dramatic extra-time triumph over France – introduced instead.

The RFU were also set to announce sanctions handed down to the Barbarians players who breached Covid-19 protocol in October, causing the cancellation of their fixture against England, which cost the RFU up to £1m.
