Danny Care waits to discover his fate for Six Nations

13 January 2014

Danny Care’s bid to regain the England No9 jersey for the Six Nations will be defined by a scan today on the left ankle he damaged in Harlequins’ 16-13 Heineken Cup loss to Clermont Auvergne.

Care left the Twickenham Stoop with his ankle in a plastic medical boot. He said: “I really don’t know how I suffered the injury because I was trying to make a tackle and it is painful. I will have to wait to see how bad it is.”

England open their Six Nations campaign against France in Paris on February 1 and Care cannot afford to be sidelined with Lee Dickson and Ben Youngs also vying for the jersey.

Quins director of rugby Conor O’Shea has already ruled Care (above) out of the club’s final pool game at Scarlets on Sunday. The club cannot qualify for the last eight but must win in Wales to have a chance of competing in the Amlin Challenge Cup quarter‑finals.

Saracens lost 21-11 away to Toulouse yesterday but will go through to the knock‑out stages of Europe’s premier club competition if they defeat Connacht at home on Saturday.

Director of rugby Mark McCall admitted: “It was a bit of a slow death out there but it has happened and we have six days to turn things around for what is a huge game.”
